This is is for the dreamer in you! Long distance riders know that there’s something magical about hitting the open road on two wheels. The wind in your face, the hum of the engine beneath you, the feeling of being free, and the endless horizon ahead—motorcycle adventure travel is a unique and exciting way to explore the world. Over the years, I’ve ridden through some incredible places, each offering its own flavor of freedom and challenge. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just dreaming of your first big trip, I want to share what O think are some of the best destinations and practical tips to make your journey unforgettable.

Choosing where to ride can be as thrilling as the ride itself. From rugged mountain passes to sun-drenched coastal highways, the world is full of routes that promise adventure and awe. I am blessed to have ridden all 50 US states and to have visited 89 countries so far! And I know that I have more to see than I have seen! Here are some of my top picks and recommendations for you to consider:

1. The Pacific Coast Highway, USA

Imagine cruising along the California coastline, the ocean sparkling to your right and cliffs rising dramatically to your left. Living in San Diego for three years gave me plenty of time to ride the PCH. Also did it in 2021, riding from Virginia to Seattle, Washington, and then South to San Diego. The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is a classic for a reason. It offers stunning views, charming towns like Carmel and Big Sur, and plenty of twisty roads to keep your adrenaline pumping. Don’t skip Monterrey and the giant Sequoias at https://www.nps.gov/seki/index.htm. And if you have time, stop for a slice of pie at a local diner, you’ll have earned it!

2. The Great Ocean Road, Australia

This one is on my bucket list! I rode a bicycle across many parts of Eastern Australia and snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, but the Navy rules did not allow motorcycle rentals when I was there. I left knowing I would be back on a motorcycle someday. If you want to combine breathtaking scenery with a laid-back vibe, riders say the Great Ocean Road is your ticket. This route hugs the southern coast of Australia, showcasing towering limestone stacks known as the Twelve Apostles. The road itself is advertised as a dream for riders, with smooth curves and plenty of photo ops. Plus, kangaroos might just hop alongside you!

3. The Transfagarasan Highway, Romania

Did this in 2023. Rented a BMW R1250 GSA from AttisWay in Romania! 31 days across Europe, and this was one of the incredible roads we took! Dubbed one of the best roads in the world, the Transfagarasan twists through the Carpathian Mountains with hairpin turns and dramatic elevation changes. It’s a challenging ride but oh-so-rewarding. The views from the top are jaw-dropping, and the fresh mountain air is invigorating. Just be sure to check the weather—this road closes in winter. Also got to see Dracula’s castle in Transylvania! Bonus!!

4. The Garden Route, South Africa

I have yet to ride a motorcycle in Africa. I met a fellow adventurer on a ferry across Chile, who told me how amazing the roads are. He invited me to come visit and ride with him in South Africa. It’s on the list! For a mix of coastal beauty and lush forests, the Garden Route is said to be unbeatable. This stretch offers everything from serene beaches to dense indigenous forests. The roads are well-maintained, and the wildlife sightings are a bonus. Apparently, riders have seen entire elephant herds out here!

5. The Ruta 40, Argentina

If you’re up for a long haul, Ruta 40 is legendary. I was here in 2023! It runs parallel to the Andes, covering diverse landscapes from deserts to glaciers. The road is mostly gravel, so it’s perfect for adventure bikes, but can be hard on tourers. This route demands respect and preparation but rewards you with solitude and spectacular views. Be ready for some gnarly winds and patches of accumulated gravel spots, thanks to the trucks that frequent this road. Pro tip: Be ready for hot and cold weather and carry a little extra gas! ⛽️

Now that you’re dreaming of these epic rides, let’s talk about how to make your trip smooth and safe. Here are some tried-and-true tips I’ve picked up on the road:

Maps and GPS are great, but don’t be a slave to them. Sometimes the best experiences come from detours and unexpected stops. I always plan my main route but leave room for spontaneous adventures. Remember, it’s about the journey, not just the destination. Pro tip: Know your cardinal directions, how to read the sun, and where the highway is at all times!

Pack Smart and Light

You don’t want to be weighed down by heavy luggage or extra things. Believe me, on my first trip to South America I was way overloaded! Left half my stuff behind before heading home! Invest in quality saddlebags or a tank bag that keeps your essentials organized. Pack clothes that layer well, a basic tool kit, and emergency supplies. Oh, and don’t forget your favorite snacks, gummies and beef jerky for me! Gotta have fuel for both you and your bike! Better to pack a few spare parts than too many shirts and pants you won’t use! T shirts are cheap on the road!

Gear Up for Safety and Comfort

A good helmet, gloves, and riding jacket are non-negotiable. I also recommend riding boots with ankle support. Weather can change quickly, so waterproof gear is a lifesaver. And yes, sunglasses or a tinted visor help reduce glare and keep you alert. Hydration pills or powders are essential. Water 💦 in a bottle is great, but a camelback/backpack with a water bladder you can freeze at night will keep you both cool and hydrated.

Maintain Your Bike Regularly

Before any big trip, give your bike a thorough check. Tires, brakes, oil, and lights should all be in top shape. A TCLOCS checklist actually works! Carry a basic repair kit and know how to use it. Don’t forget a battery jumper/starter, and tire plug kit! Download your specific bike user manual and carry it in PDF format! Believe me, a little maintenance knowledge can save you hours of frustration.

Stay Hydrated and Rested

Riding can be exhausting, especially on long days. Drink plenty of water and take breaks often. Stretch your legs, enjoy the scenery, and chat with locals or fellow riders. These moments recharge your body and spirit.
